Overview

A full week covering the western heartland: Paro's ancient temples, Thimphu's art schools and archery grounds, Punakha's stunning river-fork Dzong, and Wangdue Phodrang's terraced hillsides. Enough time to get beyond the postcard views and into the rhythm of daily Bhutanese life.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Landing in the Kingdom of Happiness

The flight into Paro dips between forested mountains. We visit Paro Dzong, a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, and Kyichu Lhakhang, intimate and ancient. Take an evening stroll through Paro's main street, where traditional shopfronts glow warmly and the mountains turn pink at sunset.

Day 2

Tiger's Nest and the National Museum

We hit the big one early — the hike to Tiger's Nest monastery, perched on a cliff 900 meters above the valley. After descending, we visit the National Museum in Ta Dzong, packed with incredible thangka paintings, ancient weapons, and textile treasures.

Day 3

Paro to Thimphu

The hour-long drive winds alongside the river. The Memorial Chorten is where you get your first taste of everyday Bhutanese spirituality. Tashichho Dzong dominates the northern end of the valley. If it is a weekend, the open-air market is a feast for the senses.

Day 4

Thimphu — Art, Textiles, and the Giant Buddha

Today is all about the layers of Thimphu — the painting school, the Textile Museum, the enormous Buddha Dordenma statue, and the takin enclosure where you meet Bhutan's gloriously weird national animal.

Day 5

Over the Dochula Pass to Punakha

The drive begins with the Dochula Pass, where 108 gleaming white chortens stand in formation and an unbroken wall of Himalayan peaks stretches across the horizon. Punakha Dzong sits at the meeting point of two rivers, its reflection shimmering in the blue-green water.

Day 6

Punakha, Wangdue, and Back to Paro

We explore the Punakha Valley before driving to Wangdue Phodrang. Then back over the Dochula Pass to Paro. Your last evening is a good time to reflect on just how much you have packed into a week.

Day 7

Departure — Until We Meet Again

Mornings in Paro have a particular magic — the valley fills with soft light, roosters crow from the farmhouses, and prayer flags catch the first breeze. The flight out offers one last cinematic sweep of Bhutan's peaks and valleys.
